About

Born and raised in South Dakota, I have been living and studying in Washington, D.C. over the past three years.

English major at the University of the District of Columbia

Chase Duffy

Hello and welcome to the boring page where I drone on about myself. Though a South Dakotan by birth, I have always had a passion for exploration and cities (hence my current residence in DC). I am a voracious reader at times, especially when something has caught my attention. Some of the greatest authors that I have ever read are Gabriel Garcia Marquez, John Steinbeck and Cormac McCarthy. I love the game of basketball passionately; I am now in the second year of my NBA League Pass subscription, and have owned countless jerseys in my lifetime. In the next year, I hope to graduate with my degree in English and begin teaching in a high school classroom. I believe the best qualities a teacher can have are empathy and compassion (in addition to a very firm grasp on the subject material!) as kids are often dealing with much more than they let on.

A Tentative Top Ten (in no particular order)

A Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

East of Eden by John Steinbeck

The Stand by Stephen King

The Trial by Franz Kafka

Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X & Alex Haley

All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy

The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz

Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Past & Current Work Experience

Tech & Retail Team at Sodexo
(August 2018 – December 2018)
I worked as a member of the tech team (with cashier duties when all of the tech was functioning) as a student worker with Sodexo on Howard University’s campus. I lost this job when I lost my standing as a student

Guest Educator at Enriched
(February 2019 – )
I worked in more than thirty public charter schools throughout the District of Columbia as a substitute teacher for levels Pre-Kindergarten through Senior level high school courses. I am still employed by Enriched, but the frequency with which I teach has dropped off slightly in recent months (due to scheduling issues with my classes).

Crew Member at Trader Joe’s
(August 2019 – )
I currently work at Trader Joe’s for my main source of income, a job which has been a breath of fresh air when compared to my previous grocery store experience. Unlike other grocers, Trader Joe’s system of rotation on the registers and the floor allows you to switch between tasks throughout the day and stretch your limbs. The fact that my checks pay my tuition also helps my mood in store.
